If you are flying into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), the single decision that shapes your first day is how you get from the terminal to your hotel. A Punta Cana airport transfer booked in advance means someone is waiting for you with your name on a sign, the price is fixed before you land, and you are on the road within minutes of clearing customs. Getting it wrong means standing outside a thatched-roof terminal at 11 p.m. negotiating a fare in a language you may not speak. What arriving at Punta Cana airport is really like
PUJ is unlike most international airports you have used. The terminals are open-air, built with palm-thatch roofs, and the walk from the aircraft to immigration is short and usually pleasant. That charm comes with a trade-off: there is limited air conditioning, and when three or four wide-body flights land within the same hour, the immigration hall gets warm and slow.
The sequence is simple:
- Electronic entry form. The Dominican Republic uses an online entry form that combines immigration and customs declarations. Complete it before you fly, on the official government portal, and save the QR code offline on your phone. Requirements change from time to time, so check the official site close to your travel date rather than relying on a blog post, including this one.
- Immigration. Passport control. Lines range from ten minutes on a quiet morning to well over an hour when several flights land together.
- Baggage claim and customs. Bags come out reasonably fast. Customs is usually a scan and a wave through.
- The arrivals hall. This is the part travelers are not prepared for. Past customs you walk into a corridor of people offering rides, tours, and timeshare presentations. If you have a transfer booked, your driver is holding a sign with your name and you walk straight past all of it.
Budget roughly 45 to 75 minutes from wheels down to standing outside the terminal. On a heavy arrival bank it can be longer. Any transfer company worth booking tracks your flight number and waits, so a slow immigration line is not a problem you need to solve at speed.
How long is the drive from Punta Cana airport to Bavaro and the other zones?
The most common question we get is how long it takes from Punta Cana airport to Bavaro, and the honest answer is that it depends which end of Bavaro you mean. Punta Cana is not a single place. It is a string of resort zones spread along roughly 40 kilometers of coastline, and the difference between the closest and the farthest is close to an hour of driving. These are the times we actually plan around, not marketing estimates:

Roads are good by regional standards and mostly flat, but traffic near the Bavaro strip in the late afternoon and heavy rain both add time. Your three options for a Punta Cana airport transfer
1. Pre-arranged private transfer
You book before you travel, give your flight number, and a driver meets you at arrivals with a sign. The vehicle is yours alone, the price is agreed in advance, and there is no waiting for other passengers to trickle out of the terminal. This is what most families and anyone landing after dark should book, and it is what we operate on our Punta Cana transfers page.
2. Airport taxi
Taxis are available and legitimate, but fares to the resort zones are typically quoted on arrival rather than metered, and you are negotiating after a long flight, often with children in tow and a queue behind you. It can work out fine. It can also cost more than a booked private transfer for a worse vehicle. Rideshare apps are not a reliable plan for airport pickup here, so do not land assuming you will open an app and solve it.
3. Hotel shuttle or a transfer included in your package
Some all-inclusive packages bundle a shared shuttle. Shared shuttles are the cheapest option and they are perfectly safe, but they operate on a group schedule: the van waits until it fills, then drops passengers hotel by hotel. If you are the last stop on a route through Bavaro, an advertised 30-minute ride can become 90 minutes. Check what your package actually includes before booking anything separately, then decide whether the time is worth the saving.
What it costs
Rates are per vehicle and cover one way, so a family of four pays the same as a couple. The zone hotels start at $22 one way, Uvero Alto at $44, and the price scales by how many of you are travelling rather than by head count.

Landing at night
A large share of flights from North America and Europe arrive in the evening, and night arrivals are where a pre-booked transfer stops being a convenience and becomes the obvious choice.
- Confirm your driver before you fly. Have the confirmation and a WhatsApp thread on your phone. Not in an email you cannot open without wifi.
- Turn on roaming or buy a local SIM. Airport wifi works, but it is easier to message your driver from the immigration line with your own data.
- Do not plan an excursion for the next morning at 7 a.m. After a late arrival, take the first morning slowly. A full-day trip like Saona Island starts early, and it is a better day when you are not running on four hours of sleep.
- Expect the road to be dark. Once you leave the airport road, lighting is limited and the drive feels longer than the map suggests. That is normal.
Traveling with children, car seats and extra luggage
Punta Cana is a family destination and the roads between the airport and the resorts are the easy part of traveling with kids. Two things are worth handling in advance rather than at the curb.
Car seats. Availability is not something to assume anywhere in the region. Message us on WhatsApp before your arrival date with your children's ages and we will confirm what we can arrange for your specific booking. Some families bring their own seat, which always works and costs nothing extra to carry on most airlines when it accompanies a child.
Luggage. Golf bags, surfboards, strollers and diving gear all need a vehicle with the space for them. Tell us what you are bringing when you book so the right vehicle shows up. This is the most common avoidable problem we see, and it is solved by one message.
Timing with small children. The shorter the drive, the better the first day goes. If you are still choosing a resort and you are traveling with toddlers, the 20 to 25 minute zones near Punta Cana Village and Cap Cana are noticeably kinder than a 40-minute run to Uvero Alto after a long flight.
Practical things worth knowing
- Book the transfer at the same time as your first excursion. One conversation, one confirmation, and your driver already knows your schedule for the week. You can see what we run on the full tour list.
- US dollars are widely accepted in the resort zones, and small bills are more useful than large ones.
- Give the real hotel name, not the brand. Several resorts in Bavaro share nearly identical names across different properties. The exact property, not just the chain, prevents a wrong-gate arrival.
- Your return pickup is earlier than you think. Plan on being collected roughly three hours before an international departure, and more during peak season when the terminal is busy.
